Open Science: history, definition, importance, current trends, examples

Definition:

As noted in the introductory section (1.9), open science is often referred to as "open scholarship" or "open research." Generally speaking, open science is an umbrella term for various activities which take place in the research life cycle and which occur under various schools of thought. The resources below provide high-level overviews of open scholarship. 

Useful resources on Open Science:

Describes official European Commission policies and initiatives in open science, with links to relevant policies and platforms. Includes brief information about the role of open science in the next EC funding round, Horizon Europe. 

FOSTER. (n.d.). What is Open Science? https://www.fosteropenscience.eu/content/what-open-science-introduction

Includes diagram of open activities within the research life cycle, a visualization of open science as a "beehive", and a diagram of the various schools of thought regarding the topic at its time of writing.

Describes an attempt to make scientific information more findable without fee-based resources such as Web of Science and SCOPUS. Includes overview of open scholarship initiatives (Section 3) taking place at time of writing, which are characterized as being "disruptive".
