Would you like to do a good deed? There is a perfect opportunity for you on February 11th, where a blood donation will be held at NTK from 8 to 11.30 AM. According to General University Hospital in Prague, blood can be donated by any healthy person, male or female, aged 18–65. Blood donor body weight should be at least 50 kg. Taking blood it is made from a single venous puncture into a disposable collection kit. It is collected with 450 ml of blood, taking from 8 to 12 minutes. Just don’t forget to bring your photo ID (ID card or passport) and proof of a health insurance valid in the Czech Republic.

By the way, donors can look forward to a rich buffet. There will be plenty of food, so you can refresh yourself before and after donation, and also a sweet reward: a delicious chocolate or chewy candies.

How to prepare?

Also, to donate blood, remember having a non-fat meal in the morning (croissant, jam, fruit, honey, etc.) and drink at least 0,5 l of liquids (mineral water, water, juice, etc.) before collection. Also, avoid any alcohol and fat meals at least 12 hours before collection (the same please apply on smoking cigarettes at least 3 hours before collection).

According to University Hospital Brno, the risk of blood-borne diseases (which means you shoud not or even you are not allowed to donate blood) is permanently or temporarily increased, for example, by:

  • risky sexual behaviour
  • sexual intercourse with a person infected with HIV or AIDS
  • sexual intercourse with a person who uses injection drugs
  • Tattoo, piercing in ears, body piercing, acupuncture, etc., carried out outside health facilities
  • Contamination of mucous membrane with or skin injuries caused by infectious material

Others:

  • Endoscopic examinations (e.g. in the stomach, intestines, urinary and respiratory tract)
  • Transfusions (administration of a transfusion product)
  • Neurosurgery using a graft of the dura mater, corneal transplants
  • Stay in a correctional facility (prison)
  • Drug addiction and alcoholism
  • Use of injectable drugs, steroids or hormones not prescribed by a physician (even in the past)
